Tzatziki Sauce: A Taste of the Mediterranean
Tzatziki sauce, a creamy and refreshing condiment, is one of the culinary gems that has emerged from the heart of the Mediterranean. Rooted deeply in Greek cuisine, this delectable sauce has won the hearts of food lovers around the globe, enhancing the flavor of dishes and adding a touch of zest to meals.
Made primarily from yogurt, cucumber, garlic, olive oil, and often seasoned with herbs like dill or mint, Tzatziki embodies the fresh and aromatic flavors of its ingredients. Its texture is velvety, and its taste is a harmonious blend of tangy yogurt and crisp cucumber, accentuated by the pungency of garlic and the richness of olive oil.
Making Tzatziki at home is a simple affair, but there’s an art to achieving the perfect balance of flavors. The key lies in using strained yogurt for thickness and ensuring that the cucumber is well-drained to prevent the sauce from becoming too watery.
I’ve tried several recipes to achieve the best consistency and I’m going to show you the ultimate recipe to ensure your Tzatziki stays creamy and doesn’t become watery.

Perfect homemade Tzatziki sauce
Ingredients
- ½ cucumber peeled & grated
- salt to taste
- 250 g greek yogurt full fat
- ½ garlic clove finely minced
- 1 tbsp white vinegar
- 1 tbsp olive oil some extra for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the Cucumber: Start by peeling the cucumber. Grate the cucumber using a box grater or a food processor. I didn´t scoop out and discard the seeds, but you can, if you want to.
- Drain the Cucumber: Place the grated cucumber in a bowl, sprinkle with some salt and let rest for 10min. Place on a clean kitchen towel and press or squeeze to remove as much liquid as possible. This step is crucial to ensure your Tzatziki doesn't turn out watery.
- Mix Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the drained cucumber, Greek yogurt, minced garlic, white vinegar and olive oil. Stir until well combined.
- Season: Add salt to taste, and adjust lemon or herbs as per your preference (optional).
- Chill: For best results, cover the Tzatziki and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. This allows the flavors to meld. However, the Tzatziki will also be delicious and creamy for immediate consumption 🙂 .
- Serve: Drizzle with a bit more olive oil upon serving if desired. Tzatziki is perfect as a dip for pita bread, vegetables, or as a complement to grilled meats.
